Today we celebrate Maia being 2 years cancer free❤️

The second photo is when we first found Maia’s lump which was misdiagnosed as a sebaceous cyst in the June. The third photo is how the lump remained for months while I was made to believe that the cyst sac just hadn’t disappeared but everything was fine.

My gut told me something wasn’t as it seemed and I went for a second opinion and surgery was quickly booked in. Thanks to Sylvia in Barry vets4pets, it was discovered that Maia had been dealing with a mast cell tumour and thankfully, despite having cancer for at least 6 months, it was low grade with clear margins and recovery was quick.

I believe there’s two big lessons in Maia’s story:

1. If your gut is telling you something isn’t right, get a second opinion as soon as you can, I still kick myself I didn’t listen to my intuition sooner and convinced myself I was just paranoid

2. Mast cell tumours can very quickly take over the body to the point of no return and can be extremely gruesome to witness. The lifestyle you create for your dogs could make or break them. I will always stand firm that the rules I have put in place for Maia’s care including diet and as minimal chemical exposure as I can control was a factor in her body’s ability to focus and fight this awful disease by herself while we were all unaware what was happening to her.

There came a point I questioned whether I would lose another dog at a young age, but here we are last week celebrating her 8th birthday while she still acts like a 2 year old and showing no signs of poor health…just her usual buttload of sass🤣
